Among the many books that are written, one occasionally discovers a rare gem--a book so full of practical ideas that its value far exceeds its cost. A Stitch In Time is just that kind of book--it is filled to overflowing with valuable tips and techniques that cost-conscious homemakers can use. It's the ideal book for everyone who recognizes the thrifty wisdom in the old adage to "Use it up . . . make it do . . . or do without." The book focuses on performing home sewing effectively, in a wide variety of ways that will stretch the family budget as well as provide useful articles for every family member. It emphasizes the value of storing needed sewing tools and supplies as a means of reducing cost, saving unnecessary shopping trips, and being prepared for emergencies that may arise. It deals with basic sewing problems which confront every homemaker: how to patch and mend warn clothing, lengthen clothing for growing children, and prepare quilts from clothing others have outgrown or discarded. But that's not all, by any means! A Stitch In Time gives plans and suggestions for making many useful items--tote bags, emergency shoes, blouses, petticoats, maternity tops, infants' pants, mittens, jumpers, patchwork skirts, etc. There are even instructions for floor coverings and typical sewing repairs. The author, Shirley Ashby Thulin, (pronounced: to LEAN), has a rich background of experience which has made her highly qualified to write this valuable book. She was a sewing editor for nine years for the Deseret News, a major metroplitan news-paper, and writes fiction and serials which have been published in various periodicals. She has taught sewing classes for 17 years in Utah and Arizona, and also owned and operated "The Baby Basket," a shop specializing in clothing for infants and children. The mother of eleven children, she has had ample opportunity to develope the skills she writes about in A Stitch In Time in her busy home.
