Enoch's Zion, Joseph's Zion,
and the Future Zion

by Jerald R. Johansen

Review

From the distant time of Enoch to the events that will climax at the Second Coming of Christ, Jerald Johansen describes both the doctrinal and spiritual City of Zion. He begins with a detailed account of Enoch himself: a great prophet and spiritual leader of a city so righteous that God took it up to dwell with Him. Much of Enoch's Zion, Joseph's Zion, and the Future Zion deals with the early days of the LDS Church, emphasizing the many revelations focused on building a new Zion.

Joseph Smith was to be an Enoch for our day; his duty was to build Zion and foster a Zion people. Through revelations and visions, he learned what was needed to accomplish the task set before him. The Lord gave instructions on gathering the saints, managing their homes, caring for those in need, and other revelations dealing with a broad spectrum of doctrines such as the Word of Wisdom, the keys of the kingdom, the oath and covenant of the priesthood, the School of the Prophets, Adam-ondi-Ahman, tithing, and temples.

From Jackson County to Nauvoo, Joseph sought to build Zion and temples to the Lord, as the temple is always the center of Zion. It is there that sacred covenants are made and services performed. The saints endured many trials and had their faith tested often, but they persevered. They were unable to create the Zion that Joseph had seen in vision, and when he was slain, even the most faithful grieved and some doubted whether Zion was possible. Brigham Young, however, urged them to complete the temple. They did, then moved on to Salt Lake City where they built a new temple and began a new city, for the Lord said there were to be many stakes and cities of Zion, not just one, and the temple was to be the center thereof.

In the coming years, another Zion will be built, the City of Enoch will be restored to the earth, and they shall dwell together for a thousand years. Enoch's Zion, Joseph's Zion, and the Future Zion closes with John the Revelator's vision, and a question to ponder. In describing Zion, John saw no temple, for "the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it." Is it possible that Zion exists today? That when we are in the temple, we are in Zion? Carefully researched and thoroughly described, this powerful book will bless those who seek to understand, grasp, and live the doctrines of Zion in the last days.
