To gain a witness of the scriptures, a thorough study
is an essential part of the process. With an understanding
of the events and people mentioned in scriptures comes the
opportunity to have the Spirit say, "This is truth, and it
is important." After this witness comes about, the scriptures
take on a special meaning, and they become a source of strength
and instruction for the reader.
An indepth understanding of the scriptures
requires an intimate knowledge of the people referred to in
those scriptures, and Every Person in the New Testament
provides the knowledge readers need to gain that understanding.
In this book, the various accounts of
incidents involving specific individuals, as recorded in the
four Gospels, are combined, providing the reader with an insight
into the similarities and variations that occur when the same
incident is told by different authors. Beginning with Acts,
detailed summaries of every chapter are provided, which help
to clarify many events.
This book is a valuable addition to the
library of anyone reading and studying the New Testament,
and most definitely for any serious biblical scholar. |

NAMES THAT BEGIN WITH "C"
CAESAR
(Note: The BD indicates there were
five Caesars: (1) Augustus, 31 B.C. (see Caesar Augustus);
(2) Tiberius, A.D. 14 (see Tiberius Caesar);
(3) Caligula, A.D. 37 (see Gaius Caesar); (4)
Claudius, A.D. (see Claudius Caesar); (5) Nero,
A.D.54 (see Nero). (1) Augustus, prior to 27
B.C. was known as Octavian. His original Latin name was Gaius
Octaviaus. His adopted name was Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus,
and was also known as Caesar Augustus. He was born Sept. 23,
63 B.C., and died Aug. 19, A.D. 14 (EB, vol. I, p. 650).
(2) Tiberius, whose full name was Tiberius Claudius Nero Caesar
Augustus, was born Nov. 16, 42 B.C, in Rome and died March
16, A.D. 37, in Capri (ibid., vol. IX, "Tiberius,"
p. 994). (3) Caligula's real name was Gaius Caesar. He
was born Aug. 31, A.D. 12, in Antium, modern Anzio, Italy,
and died Jan. 24, A.D. 41, in Rome. He was emperor from 37
to 41, following Tiberius (ibid., vol II, p. 459).
(4) Claudius was originally named Tiberius Claudius Drusus
Nero Germanicus. He was born Aug. 1, 10 B.C., in Lugdunum,
now Lyon, and died Oct. 13, A.D. 54. He "ascended the throne
suddenly in A.D. 41 when the reigning emperor was murdered
and became a firm friend of the army. He was poisoned by his
niece Agrippina, whom he had married" (ibid., p. 976).
(5) Nero's original name was Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus.
He was born Dec. 15, A.D. 37, in Rome, and died A.D. 68, in
Rome. He put both his mother (in A.D. 59) and his wife Octavia
(in A.D. 62) to death. He is "remembered for his unstable
character and his cruelty" (ibid., vol. VII, p. 263).
CAESAR AUGUSTUS (i.e., Caesar (1))
Luke 2:1-6. CAESAR AUGUSTUS
was the first Roman emperor and began his reign in 31 B.C.
He issued a degree that all the world should be taxed. This
required everyone to return to his own city to be taxed. Joseph
and Mary, therefore, traveled to Bethlehem; and, thus, it
was there that Jesus was born.
CAIAPHAS
Matt. 26.3, 57-66; Mark 14:53-64; Luke
22:54. CAIAPHAS, son-in-law of Annas, was
the high priest (A.D. 18 to A.D. 36) who plotted with the
chief priests, scribes and elders of the people to take Jesus
and kill him. After Jesus was betrayed by Judas Iscariot,
he was taken before Caiaphas and the others and tried. After
the chief priests and elders found false witnesses to testify
against Christ, Caiaphas found Jesus guilty of blasphemy and
sentenced him to die.
Luke 3:2-3. Caiaphas and Annas
(A.D. 7 to A.D. 14) were the high priests when Tiberius Caesar
was in the fifteenth year of his reign, Pontius Pilate was
governor of Judaea, Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, and John
the Baptist came into the country about Jordan preaching the
baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.
John 11:49 (47-53). When the chief
priests and Pharisees met in council to decide what to do
regarding Jesus, fearing that if they left Jesus alone all
men would believe on him and then the Romans would come and
take away their station and their nation, . . . |
