How to Memorize The Articles of Faith

Marcha A. Fox

Review

Almost everyone agrees that knowing the Articles of Faith is a terrific idea. They help you to really know what you believe and to gain a testimony of the teachings of the Church. They're a great missionary tool and a quick and easy way to explain Latter-day Saint beliefs to others. Memorizing them is also required to obtain the Gospel in Action award in Primary.

Some children memorize easily, but for others memorizing can present a tremendous challenge. This workbook will show how it can be done easily. The methods work for both children and adults, but the format is geared for children. Don't underestimate the simplicity involved until you try it. It works!

Step 3: Make a Movie in Your Mind
Now the fun begins! Remembering each memory picture separately is possible, but an easier way is to tie them all together in a cartoon-a "movie in your mind."  Imagine the following:
1. Picture the three circles.
2. The circles separate into two apples.
3. As the stems of the apples grow, the apples shrink to nothing and the stems become crosses.  Another cross joins the other two to make three.
4. The three crosses merge together in one, and the bar slides to the left and upward to form the number four.
5. The stem of the number four slides up and to the right, circling around to form and oval.  This becomes the base of a telephone.  A white rectagle with the number 555-5555 is on the front.
6. The telephone base becomes a triangle, which duplicates itself and flips over to become a six-pointed Star of David.
7. The points flatten out to form a rectangle, which then becomes a package wrapped with a big, red bow.  The bow unties, forming a seven.
8. The box opens; inside are the Bible and Book of Mormon.  The ribbon forms the number eight around the books.
9. One book opens to reveal a large number nine with an eye inside.
10.  The eye becomes part of the face of a Lamanite with a number ten on his shirt.
11.  The Lamanite enters the church building with the number eleven showing on the doors.
12.  The doors open and there are twelve leaders lined up in front, standing on a 12-inch ruler.
13.  All of them are staring at a little child on the front row with the number thirteen on his shirt.
Once you've memorized this cartoon, you should be able to recite the main ideas, one by one in order, in a few seconds. Now that you have the main ideas memorized, the only thing left to do is learn each Article of Faith word for word.  Step 4 will help you with that.
