Accidents
Safety tip: when you throw a ball in the yard, you should try to think where it might go. It could go
through a window if you're not careful.
Kevin, age 15
According to the National Safety Council, about 25,000 people die from household accidents
every year. For adults, the largest number of these are due to falls in the home. For children
drowning, fire, and poisoning account for the most deaths.
You can take a number of steps to make your home a safer place. For instance, drugs and
medicines should be put in a place where small children can't reach them. The same is true
for any poisons, chemicals, or fertilizers. Keep a flashlight with fresh batteries on hand in case
of power failure. Check to see that dark areas such as stairs, laundry rooms, and patios are well
lighted. Learn how to swim and how to give basic first aid.
Talk to your parents about what to do in an emergency. Keep extra money on hand and learn
how to give directions to help someone reach your house. Make sure your house number can
be seen from the street so that the police, ambulance drivers, or fire fighters can find your home
without delay.
Here are some safety tips that will help you stay safe in your home:
1. Keep your house keys in a place where they will not be noticed by others.
2. Never hide a spare key under a doormat.
3. Never put your name on your house key.
4. Never take any medicine if you are home alone.
5. Never stick anything but a plug into an electric outlet.
6. Immediately wipe up any liquids that spill on the floor.
7. Don't let pot handles hang over the outside of the stove. Keep them turned toward the back.
8. Don't use garden tools or sharp kitchen knives if an adult is not supervising you.
9. Never hide in an old trunk, cleaning bag, or refrigerator.
10. Use a rubber mat on the floor of the tub or shower.
11. Never play with guns or firearms.
12. If you are home alone and you smell gas, go next door and ask a neighbor to call the
gas company.
