Earthquake Safety

Ellen Jackson

Review

Knowing what to do during an earthquake can mean the difference between life and death. Earthquake Safety educates children and their families with concise information on earthquakes and tsunamis and thier causes. Two major tremors, the 1964 Alaskan earthquake and the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, are detailed, showing what destructive power these forces can generate.

Important supplies to have on hand are suggested, including tools, food, fresh water, clothing blankets, etc. In addition, a supply checklist is provided. A section on what to do during an earthquake helps to prepare children for such an occurrence no matter where they may be.
Another important feature is a list of safety spots to which people can go to protect themselves during an earthquake.

This valuable book, through directed toward children, contians all the essential earthquake safety information needed by adults, families, and school and civic organizations.

Security Measures
1. Put latches on cabinet doors. This will keep dishes and kitchenware safely in the cupboards.
2. Some candle shops sell wax dabs that can be stuck to the bottom of things that might break to
hold them in place in cabinets.
3. Fix bookcases, refrigerators, and water heaters to a wall.
4. Heavy objects should not be stored in high places where they could fall and hurt someone.
5. Keep things that might burn easily or quickly, such as cleaning fluids and paints, in safe places
on lower shelves.
6. Remove glass bottles from high shelves and from the bathroom medicine closet.
7. Beds should not be placed under a window or beneath shelves holding books or other heavy objects.
8. Choose a friend or relative who lives in another state to be the contact person. Everyone can agree
to call this person to give messages to other family members. (It is usually easier to callout of
state than to make a local call after an earthquake).
9. Hold a few earthquake practice drills with the entire family.

During an Earthquake

If you are at home
1. Take cover under a strong table, bench, or desk, or crouch in a corner. Don't run outside.
The greatest danger is near the outer walls of buildings.
2. Keep calm and try to help other people keep calm.
3. If you are in a tall building, do not use the elevators. Stay where you are, but away from window
areas and falling objects.
4. If you can, cover your head and the back of your neck with a pillow or book.
5. Stay away from mirrors, windows, and other glass.
6. If you are in a crowded public building, don't rush for the doors. Move away from shelves holding
objects that might fall on you.

If you are at school-
1. Get under your desk, facing away from the windows.
2. If you are on the playground, stay away from the buildings.
3. If you are on a moving school bus, stay in your seat until the driver stops.
4. Obey the teachers or other adults in charge of your safety.

If you are outside-
1. Move into an open area away from buildings, trees, and power poles.
2. If you are in a car, ask the driver to stop. Remain inside the car until the shaking stops.
3. Don't park under an overpass.
4. If power lines fall on the car you're in, don't touch anything metal inside the car. Wait for help.
