Junior Missionary Handbook

by Anne Hinton Pratt

Review

Why wait to prepare for a mission? Children can plan for their future today, and the Junior Missionary Handbook is an excellent guide to get them started. The book, directed toward older Primary-aged children, is a fun study guide which presents a broad variety of missionary-type subjects. Each topic is presented in a brief statement which states the basics of the doctrine in a manner children can easily understand. Then comes a role-playing activity where children imagine themselves in missionary situations. Various types of puzzles, questions and answers, and other workbook-type activities are included to provide a more complete learning opportunity.

The handbook is a teaching guide which requires participation. With its imaginative approach to learning, children will be more likely to retain the information it presents on gospel principles. And whether children elect to go on a mission or not, the book is a valuable training tool preparing them for the inevitable time when they'll be faced with the questions of non-members who are curious to learn more about The Church of Jesus Christ of  Latter-day Saints.

Subjects included in the Junior Missionary Handbook are:

         - Prophets
         - The Priesthood
         - Joseph Smith
         - Baptism
         - The Restoration
         - Repentance
         - The Book of Mormon
         - The Word of Wisdom
         - The Godhead
         -Tithing
         - Heaven and Hell
         - Temples
         - The Plan of Salvation
         - Testimony
         - Prayer

The Junior Missionary Handbook is a blend of knowledge and fun all wrapped into one! It's an excellent book to start young Latter-day Saints down the path of missionary preparation.

The Book of Mormon is a record of some of the people who lived in America long ago. It tells us about the things these people did. The Book of Mormon tells how happy people can be when they keep the commandments of God and how sad they can be when they don't. There are many interesting stories in this book. They teach us that we need to always obey God. We learn from the Book of Mormon that Jesus came to teach the gospel to the people in America. Jesus loves all people. He wants everyone to learn and live the gospel.
Ancient prophets wrote the Book of Mormon on gold plates, but because of the wickedness of the people, the plates were buried in the Hill Cumorah. Joseph Smith was told by angel Moroni where the gold plates were buried. He took them out and translated them into English. It was hard work and took a lot of time, but he did it for us. God wanted us to know about the people and prophets who lived in America long ago. God helped Joseph translate the Book of Mormon so that we could better understand the gospel.
