Amazing But True Mormon Stories

by Joan Oviatt

Review

This is a delightful collection of remarkable vignettes about men, women, and events in Latter-day Saint history. The accounts, collected from documental historical sources, range from the early years of the Church to the modern era.

Included are accounts of Joseph Smith's father, imprisoned on false charges, "miraculously" escaping from a locked room with the help of an apostate jailer; a visit to the spirit world recounted by the wife of an early LDS President; little-known Mormon connections to the ill-fated Donner Party and the island of Robinson Crusoe; and the Mormon saw-mill cook who set off the California gold rush. Also in this remarkable collection are true accounts of the California governor who risked his life to defend Joseph Smith, and the President of the Republic of Texas who help defeat President Buchanan's plan to wage war on the Mormon Pioneers.

There is plenty of humor in these stories, too. You'll chuckle over the untamed mule that saved the Mormon Mexican colonies from annihilation; the young man that felt insulted by Brigham Young who later became one of America's best-loved authors; and Orderville's hilarious "Pants Rebellion."

You'll enjoy the tale of mischevious Ithamar Sprague and the monster footprints that terrified Southern Utah; and the seventeen-year-old male missionary in New Zealand whose call to a position in the local LDS branch's Relief Society shaped his life.

There are also true accounts of LDS influences in surprising foreign places like Soviet Russia. There, a farmer taught a U.S. ambassador basic elements of Mormon Church doctrine and corrected the highly-educated ambassador's misconceptions about the LDS faith. The farmer's name? Leo Tolstoy.

The short, quick-to-read, sometimes startling stories in this book will be enjoyed by every reader who likes intriguing tales with uplifting and always surprising endings.
